This is a very serious joint-effort and to acknowledge those amazing retails stores, yoga shops, gyms and holistic centers we will be showcasing a very special store each month. Our editor will interview the owner of the store, to share their personal philosophy on the subject of mind over matter and then we will share with you why we like this store, what makes it warm and fuzzy to us. Truth, trust and friendship underline all our intentions and our vendors and retailers are no exception.

Erewhon Natural Foods Market is an independent market that has been serving the Los Angeles community since 1968. Erewhon’s roots are in the Macrobiotic movement of the 1960s. Macrobiotics (meaning “large or long-life”) is a philosophy of living a balanced life which includes a dietary regime centered on whole grains and vegetables (from land and sea) and based upon the opposing/attracting forces in nature referred to as yin/yang. During this Macrobiotic movement the demand for macrobiotic products increased, but such foods were in short supply, thus the creation of our lovely Erewhon. After 30 years, it is still family-owned and operated.

When you walk into Erewhon you find a wonderful mix of locals along with a few tourists as Erewhon is nestled next to The Grove, a popular LA attraction of stores galore. You will also find Tonic Bar groupies as well; these are the folks you will find at Erewhon daily for their fix of some wonderful elixirs! Erewhon also hosts a variety of educational events from cooking classes to health forums. Erewhon is truly committed to the health of your body as well as your mind!
At Erewhon you will not walk far before being greeted by a friendly staff member who will ask you if you are finding everything you need. No searching for absent staff assistance here!

Erewhon’s grocery buyer, Joel Sandoval is a wonderful example of Erewhon’s core values and sense of family attitude. Joel started working at Erewhon years ago as a stocker and has moved his way up now to buyer. My experiences with Joel are always great as he is a very down to earth and open minded individual who genuinely loves the space in which he lives. He is also a phenomenal artist and contributes to the walls of Erewhon with his lovely paintings. When I first approached Joel with Aquamantra, he did not once hesitate in supporting our then very new company and wanted to join us in our mission of raising consciousness in humanity. Erewhon now has trouble keeping Aquamantra in stock due to its popularity amongst their customers!
